How Sales Tax is Calculated
Sales tax is charged and collected on all taxable items. When applicable, sales tax is calculated as an estimate on the checkout page before you place your order. The delivery/shipping address determines which tax rates apply.
We use a third-party tax service to calculate sales tax on eligible purchases. This service refers to tax rates levied by tax jurisdictions throughout the United States along with information about the items (i.e., product category codes) that are considered taxable in each jurisdiction to generate sales tax estimates.
Tip! Many factors can change between order placement and payment processing which could result in an increase or decrease in the actual sales tax amount charged when we process your order. Please refer to your Order History page to find the final charge, including all sales tax collected.
Submitting Resale/Exemption Certificates for Sales Tax Exemption
To exempt your purchases with the purpose of resale from sales tax, you must provide us with the following before placing an order:
- A valid resale/exemption certificate
- Your name, email address, and phone number
- Your Emerson Ecologics customer number (if known)

Note: Sales tax licenses and seller permits are not the correct documents needed to exempt your purchases from potential sales tax collection. We accept resale and exemption certificates only.
Sales Tax Refunds
Any orders placed while certificates are under review will be charged sales tax if purchases are taxable.
Alabama’s Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT)
The State of Alabama created the simplified sellers use tax program (SSUT) under Statute § 40-23-192. We're required to provide the following statement under the SSUT:
Seller has collected the simplified sellers use tax on taxable transactions delivered into Alabama and the tax will be remitted on the customer’s behalf to the Alabama Department of Revenue. Seller’s program account number is SSU-R010208370.
Illinois Grocery Tax Suspension (July 1, 2022)
From July 1, 2022 - June 30th, 2023, the state of Illinois sales tax on groceries is 0%. Local sales tax may still apply.
